Hi all. I’ve been trying to find which is a good overall puppy/dog food. I adopted a Beagle mix 6 months ago when he was only a month old. The owner was feeding him Purina which I wasnt happy about. I absolutely don’t want corn in his diet.
I then purchased a bag of Californa Natural Chicken and rice. My pup got bored with it after a week and would hardly touch it anymore. I then learned it only has 1 protein source and is mainly for dogs with allergies. I then went with Taste of The Wild which is grain free and reasonably priced. He tired of this food as well. Even when I mix in Wellness, Evo, or Evangers canned food! Its been about 3 days that he’s eating very little. I put half a cup mixed with wet food in the AM and half a cup in the PM mixed with homemade chicken soup. He hasnt been touching the AM meal and only eats a small amount at the PM meal. Theres so much conflicting info on whether to feed things like Buffalo, Bison, Venison, etc and to save those protein sources if he develops allergies. The ToTW formula has all exotic meats. I think I’m going to go with a chicken/turkey diet as he loves that when theres leftovers.
Now I know grain free is supposedly the way to go but I’m thinking it might be too rich for my guy. Afterall, he’s not a workhorse. I also see all these grain free foods replace grains with potatoes. My pups stomach seems to be a bit hard/bloated, he vomits once a month, sometimes vile sometimes the food he just ate, and his stools always seem to be on the soft side.
I’m thinking about trying Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lovers Soul. I’m thinking maybe the rice will actually help with his tummy and firm up his stools? It’s very cheap and seems to have fantastic ingrediants. I was also considering trying Evo small bites but the fat/protein is so high for my mildly active dog. Same goes for Orijen. I had a sample bag of Wellness core which he devoured and it also has a more reasonable fat/protein content. I appreciate the micro-organisms in it as well.
So I’m going to go with Chicken Soup or Wellness Core. Core says its for 1+ year old dogs though. Again, this confuses me as other grain free diets like Orijen and Taste of the Wild are ALS or have a puppy formula that exceeds those of Wellness! I guess I’m just curious if grain free is really that important and right for less active dogs? Every vet I talked to said boiled chicken and rice is the best thing for upset tummies, so wouldnt brown rice be a good thing for a dogs diet? I just want him to enjoy his food and have firm stools! I wasted SO much money on these top brand foods that he doesnt like–even when topping it with expensive canned meats!

I have been shopping around for a diet dog food. I am currently feeding Taste of the Wild Bison and Venison to my 4 year old beagle mix. He’s a bit chunky, I’d like him to lose 5-10 lbs. He gets fed 2- 1 cup meals a day, which is below the feeding guidelines on the bag, and he hasn’t lost any weight. He gets walked nearly every day. I’m thinking he’s eating too much red meat, which contains more fat than poultry. What would be a better alternative? He has a sensitive stomach, which is why I am now feeding him grain free.

Oh Human Race:
This is not a command sectarian!
But it is truly a universal base:
Else you may have to face,
A losing race!
From High Cholesterol
A threat to all;
To residual toxin
Which refuse to mix in
Eliminated Waste and stick like a paste
To the Ileum wall:
Forcing one day a doctor call
And your bank balance to fall!
Don’t think meat gives better taste:
Surely you forget in haste,
That it is only the humble veggie ingredient
Which is mixed with flesh from an animal obedient
To produce that delicious diet :
To fool the digesting stomach
That it is fed with a food which is vegetarian mulch!
For
You have not been created or evolved to be a carnivore:
You don’t have claws like a wild boar!
Nor teeth like a tiger,
Which clamps with vigour
The neck of a bison much bigger!
You have much longer intestine,
Not meant to digest serpents although it looks so serpentine!
But meant only to tackle vegetables and grain:
And thus avoid getting migraine!

Our trainer reccomended getting our dog used to a variety of different food, especially with different meat sources, to give them more complete nutrients and make sure they get as many different kinds of amnio acids as possible, so here are a few foods that we have found, we want to have a regular rotain of quite a few so any input is great. Please no food bashing unless you have proof (please provide a link), then I am very interested to read about it!
Timberwold Organics (specifically the venison and the bison)
Eikanuba Large Breed Puppy (which was his main food before)
Wellness Puppy
Eagle Pack Large Breed Puppy
Canidea All Life Stages (the chicken and turkey one)
Innova Large Breed Puppy
Please feel free to add suggestions, I am looking for food with out fat in the 1st 4 or 5 ingredients, with no citric acid, and on the lower side (around 22-26%) for protien, fat (around 12%), and calcium (ideally about 1.1% but not super strict since he’ll be getting a variety) Thanks

I’m starting my 2 pit bulls and my Great dane back on the raw diet again.. primarily consisting of chicken quarters with some skin removed (less fat). I also want to put them on a premium kibble (grain free) I used to use Innova EVO, but it keeps going up in price!! I just found this new food, taste of the wild, and it’s grain free. It comes in several varieties, like a prarie diet, a highlands diet, etc. I chose the prarie diet with bison and venison (as well as some lamb). I was wondering if anyone else has used this brand, and the results they saw. Also, if anyone feeds kibble anad raw, then what sort of portioning do you use? I was thinking a quarter per pit bull, and a cup of the kibble, and double for the dane. ( I will also supplement with different meats, liver and other organ meats and some veggies.. and def. pumpkin pulp.. but chicken will be the main meat)
I will add in more info if asked..
BTW, the pit bulls weigh in at about 60 bs, and the dane is about 100

I won’t work with feedlot medicine because it violates my personal ethics. But what is wrong with eating humanely and sustainably raised food animals?
I buy almost all my meat and all my eggs, milk, and honey from local farmers (usually at the farmers market) from pasture raised cattle, bison, pork, chicken, goat, and lamb. We even got a 25 lbs pasture raised turkey for Thanskgiving this year (boy, was it good!). My dogs are also all on a raw diet and much of their diet is derived from these sources. The stuff I can’t buy at the farmers market, I try to buy at the university meat lab so it is still local and the animals are well cared for.
Biologically, we are omnivores. If we raise animals on a biologically appropriate diet in sustainable and humane conditions without danger from predators, what is ethically wrong with this?
